When many people call a locksmith, they are in the midst of an emergency, and they desperately need to access a locked car, change the locks on their homes or rekey their cars due to lost keys. If you are the type of person who likes to plan ahead and you want to minimise your chances of facing an emergency locksmith call, there are things you can do.

To reduce your risk of having to call a locksmith in a panic, consider doing these things now:

1. Install keyless locks on your home

Sometimes, people call locksmiths to put new locks on their homes or apartments after they have lost their keys. These concerned people don't want to risk having thieves find their keys and gain entry into their homes. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to avoid this type of emergency.

You can get rid of your mechanical, key-based locks and replace them with coded or biomechanical locks. With these locks, you don't have to worry about losing the keys. If you lose your code or share it with someone who turns out to be untrustworthy, you can just change your code. With biomechanical locks, no one can enter without your fingerprints or other biological signature.

2. Put locks inside your doors

If you don't want to replace your existing locks with keyless locks, install locks that lock from the inside. Deadbolts are very effective but require you to use a drill during installation. Chain locks are affordable and can be installed with a simple screwdriver.

That way if you lose your keys, you can at least be assured that a thief cannot access your home if you are there and it is locked from the inside.

3. Secure a spare key to your key

Want to avoid a frantic call to the locksmith when you've accidentally locked yourself out of your car? Then, secure a spare key to the vehicle. You can buy magnetic boxes that attach to the underbelly of the vehicle, keeping your spare key easily accessible.

4. Change your car locks to keypads

While some people love having a spare key magnetised to the bottom of their vehicles, others claim the magnetic boxes become dislodged on bumpy roads. If you are in the latter camp, tak with a locksmith about changing your car locks to keypads.

Then you can leave your keys in the car and enter with a code.

5. Make copies of all your keys

People who have lost all of their house or car keys often have to hire locksmiths to make them all new keys. This process can be expensive and time consuming, and if you have hired a locksmith to create new transponder keys for a car, it can be particularly expensive. Avoid these "surprises" by having spare keys made for all of your homes and vehicles now.
